Reviving Nostalgia: Kowloon Restaurant's Award-Winning Design

Min Liu and Huawei Dai's Unique Blend of Eastern and Western Hong Kong Style

Step into the Kowloon Restaurant, and you are transported to a different time and place. This nostalgic-themed restaurant, designed by Min Liu and Huawei Dai, captures the essence of Hong Kong, blending Eastern and Western influences. The design, which won the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019, is a testament to the designers' creativity and innovation.

The Kowloon Restaurant is a unique blend of Eastern and Western Hong Kong style. The design is inspired by the nostalgia of Hong Kong's streets, roads, and neon lights. The designers have used elements such as horizontal pulled gates, retro printed glasses, and mosaic flooring to create an atmosphere that lets diners feel the Hong Kong style, even if they are in Chongqing.

The restaurant's unique properties lie in its nostalgic theme and the way it expresses Hong Kong-style features in space and atmosphere. The design is divided into three floors with a total area of 237 square feet, with each floor having a distinct height. The first floor stands at 4.5 m, the second at 3.2 m, and the third at 3.4 m.

The realization of this design involved innovative use of materials and processes. The doors and windows on the first floor are double-layered, with a folding glass door inside and a horizontal folding gate on the outside. The window is separated from the retro glass by a metal skeleton to form a foldable window. The blue tile is made by roasting clay as the main raw material, and mosaic tiles are composed of dozens of small pieces of bricks stuck to a thin net, combined into a relatively large tile.

The design process was not without its challenges. The most difficult part was sourcing materials and processes that were not available locally or that were not possible at the processing plant. However, the designers overcame these challenges to create a design that resonates with age, memory, and Hong Kong style.

The Kowloon Restaurant is more than just a place to eat; it's a place to experience a different culture. The design is a testament to the designers' ability to blend trends and traditions, creating a small world of Eastern and Western cultures. The restaurant aims to bring the most authentic food to diners who appreciate good cuisine, with a team of chefs and service staff originating from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and other regions.

Min Liu and Huawei Dai's design for the Kowloon Restaurant is a testament to their creativity and innovation. The design, which won the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019, is a testament to their ability to blend form and function in a way that is both aesthetically pleasing and practical. The Kowloon Restaurant is a shining example of how design can transport us to a different time and place, and how it can evoke feelings of nostalgia and a sense of belonging.
